Reboots of popular classics usually never pan out. They either never live up to the hype or are just sad copies of the original. Not Ghostbusters though.
Before I go on about this movie, here's a little trailer if you haven't seen it yet!
Erin Gilbert (Kristen Wiig) who wants to work at a university discovers that an old friend, Abby Yates (Melissa McCarthy) has continued to publish a book she helped write about the paranormal. Afraid that the book would ruin her chances to get a job, she goes to confront Abby at her workplace, where she meets Jillian Holtzmann (Kate McKinnon). They head out to investigate a haunted house and see a real life apparition. Stuff happens, Abby and Holtzmann get fired too and the three of them decide to start a Ghost hunting business. They hire Kevin (Chris Hemsworth) as a sort of secretary/eye candy and team up with Patty (Leslie Jones). The bad guy is this weird loner who wants to start the apocalypse to get back at the world that never treated him like a human being. He does succeed and takes control of Kevin's body in the process but the girls kick butt and save the city!
***I realized this was supposed to be a summary so I stopped myself from explaining every single thing that happened in the movie.
My ThoughtsAs someone who has watched and enjoyed the old Ghostbusters movies and cartoons, I enjoyed this fun reboot. One of the biggest differences was not only the fact that the Ghostbusters' genders were completely reversed, but also the fact that this felt like a totally separate Ghostbusters from the original movie. You don't feel like they're connected at all. They are a separate story, with separate characters and that's great since you end up not being able to compare the two (in my opinion at least).
Some things I liked about the movie:
- The Cast & Story
It's an all female cast and let me just say they are amazing. All of them played their roles perfectly and I can't imagine anyone else replacing them. The movie itself was an introduction to how this Ghostbusters was formed and I loved it. Sure there were some loopholes here and there, but you forgive those little quirks because they have such a strong cast and characters. In fact, I think it's the little quirks that made this movie so great to me.
- The Humor
All I did throughout this movie was laugh. You can hear some of the humor from their trailer and let me tell you, that is just scratching the surface. Every single one of the cast was funny in one way or another. They make a lot of references to the old Ghostbusters movies too! So if you haven't seen the old classics and didn't get the jokes, then I suggest you go back and rewatch them! :)
- The Cameos
CAMEOS! CAMEOS! CAMEOS!
Sorry for shouting, but the cameos really helped me enjoy the movie more to be honest. Again, if you aren't familiar with the old movies, then you wouldn't have recognized that the original cast of the Ghostbusters. They pop out of nowhere throughout the movie and it was great to see how many I could make out. Even Dana (the lady from both Ghostbusters I and II) made a brief appearance!
In fact, that's not the only thing that made an appearance. If you stayed to the very end of the movie, you would have seen the end credits. Yes, there are end credits. If you only stayed for Chris Hemsworth dancing and haven't seen it, here it is:
Now, if you've watched the original Ghostbusters (YES YOU MUST WATCH IT) then you know who Patty is talking about. ;)
Some things I didn't like about the movie:
Okay..... I've had a bunch of people tell me they like his character. I only thought of him as annoying. He's a typical stereotype and we all know that not all buff, good-looking men aren't this dumb. BUT, I gave him a little slack since this is the Ghostbusters, I mean they chase ghosts around with handmade proton packs for goodness sake. However, the original Ghostbusters' secretary wasn't this dumb? Maybe they wrote him this way as sort of comic relief, or a way to move the story? I don't know. All I know is I didn't really enjoy Kevin.
- The Villain
I feel like his motives weren't really explained? Sure they show a bunch of people calling him a weirdo or a creep, but that can't be all right? He's a character that has been wronged his whole life. Genius. Bullied. Outcast. I expected more character development? I don't know.
Kristen Wiig as Erin Gilbert
Melissa McCarthy as Abby Yates
I am upset I couldn't find a better picture of her. Abby needs more love!
Kate McKinnon as Jillian Holtzmann
Leslie Jones as Patty Tolan
Chris Hemsworth as Kevin
Overall, I loved this movie. It's a great movie with lots of humour, cool effects, badass females, and dancing hunks. I left the cinema smiling and I don't think I remember the last time I smiled so hard after watching a movie. I totally recommend you to go watch it, even though you have not watched the old movies. This movie can be enjoyed on its own, but you'll have an even better time if you watched the classics.
A special thanks to my friend, Kelly for getting me a free ticket to watch this movie! I owe you one haha
Also if you're in love with the Ghostbusters soundtrack, I recommend going on to Spotify and searching for "Ghostbusters"! They have a cool list of music from the new movie and the old classics as well!
