How to Choose a Tarot Deck

If you're starting out, it can be very tempting to go with the first beautifully designed tarot deck you see. In my case, I was so hung up on getting a tarot deck (any tarot deck) that I didn't do enough research. Now, I have a deck just lying around in my room, unused because I just couldn't connect with it.

So, I'm going to talk about the things you could do or consider doing when you choose your very first tarot deck. Everyone's needs are different, you just have to figure out what works for you.

Research is Key

Some tarot decks have extra cards in them that are not included in regular decks, or they might change the name of a card from the Major Arcana, change the suits of the Minor Arcana and so on. If you want to learn the absolute basics, I suggest you choose a tarot deck with traditional tarot imagery. The imagery can help you develop your intuition and you can learn each cards' meanings quickly.

Cheap Decks are Okay!

If you're on a budget, there's nothing wrong with getting a secondhand deck or a cheaper imitation of a deck you love. There's nothing wrong with trying to spend within your means. Although it is recommended you purchase a new deck for yourself, I tend to wave away such superstitions. If it is your first deck, it's alright to spend within a budget since you'll be learning more about the craft anyway.

Imagery & Symbolism

When I choose a deck, the first thing I look at is the artwork. I like brightly coloured decks with interesting imagery. I know I mentioned that you need to get a deck that has classic depictions of the arcana but there are a lot of new tarot decks which are not only great for learning but they look great too. Plus, if you like how your deck looks, you'll find yourself reaching for it more!

Find a Connection

As I mentioned above, there are so many different decks with varying art and imagery. However, just looking for a deck that looks great to you isn't enough. Different decks give off different energy and sometimes it just clashes with our own. It's difficult to get a feel of the deck when you're ordering online, which is why some people recommend you to purchase your deck in person. If you are ordering online, the only way to get a feel for your deck is when it arrives and you start working with it. I'll talk about bonding with your deck in another blog post. :)

What are you using it for?

Are you going to do readings for yourself or for other people? Some people, especially if you're planning to get paid for your readings, might not appreciate seeing nude or gory images on cards.

I hope this will help you to pick out your very first tarot deck!
Personally, I usually pick my decks based on the artwork and work hard to bond with the deck when it does arrive in the mail. There are many ways to bond with your deck so you can work with them better. I'll talk about that in another blog post.

What kind of tarot decks do you want right now? Is there a particular deck you've purchased that has surprised you?

If you're ready to find your very own deck I wrote a whole post about where you can find tarot decks in Malaysia!

Check it out, here!
