Dinner at Ben's Pavilion with My Favourite People

There's nothing like having a delicious dinner surrounded by great people.

This is more of a personal update more than anything. So if you were looking for a Ben's restaurant review, do keep scrolling.

Yoojin, Nuri, and I met in our pre-university years when we were studying at Sunway. I had the great opportunity to be surrounded by people from many different backgrounds. While I don't keep in touch with many of them today, I'm really grateful to have met the special few that I still call friends today.

I remember the first time I met Nuri and Yoojin. It was at the Sunway cafeteria. Come to think of it, we were all really awkward. It's a miracle we even became friends? I swear if you saw us all back then, you'd be surprised at us right now. I'd post a photo but I have a feeling Nuri will murder me. 😅

Fast forward 7 years later and we're all still friends. Even despite the fact that I have a bad habit of disappearing and not reaching out to people and there were those couple of years when Yoojin was in the army and Nuri was overseas studying.

While I do make time to catch up with Nuri quite often, it has been quite a while since the three of use had met each other. It was nice getting together to talk about the adventures we had and our lives right now.

Ben's Pavilion Review

Since it was my first time eating at a Ben's (yes, I've never eaten in any of their outlets), I thought, I might as well do a brief review of the Pavilion branch that we ate at.

Ambience & Cleanliness •

The restaurant was nicely lit with plenty of empty seats available. However, we entered the restaurant around 7.30pm on a Sunday night. I was kind of surprised that it was as empty as it was, but in hindsight, I'd prefer an empty restaurant to an overcrowded one.

When it comes to cleanliness, I didn't have any trouble with slick and grease covered floors. Everything was quite clean including the seats. You know how sometimes you can see the oily finger marks left behind from previous customers? Yeah, I hate those. They're one of the reasons I always have a pack of baby wipes in my bag. Fortunately, the seats were clean.

• Service •

We received menus the moment we sat down, which was great. However, since the three of us hadn't seen each other in a while, it took us a while to decide on our meals because we were so busy catching up. The waitress had to keep coming back. In fact, she asked us twice if we were ready to order but graciously accepted our "Sorry, not yet" answer to serve the other customers.

Our food also arrived in a timely manner. My Macaroni Cheese was the last to arrive, but I didn't have to wait long. Time flies when you're in good company after all.

• Food •

I had the chance to taste all three of the dishes each of us offered and I have to say I was very satisfied with my cheesy choice. The Macaroni Cheese was warm when it arrived and the pasta wasn't mushy. I really recommend this dish not only cause of the cheese but for the impeccably seasoned meatballs. I kind of wished they put more pieces in there.

In my opinion the the carbonara was under seasoned, but still delicious otherwise. It wasn't dry or cold. For Nuri's beef lasagna, I absolutely adored the crunchy chips that came with it. I didn't really like how the lasagna was swimming in sauce but that's a personal pet peeve. Otherwise, the food was good.

• Price •

I was looking pictures of Ben's menu online as I didn't take a picture while I was there and was shocked to see how much the prices have increased. The only price that I'm sure about is my Mac n Cheese which was RM35. According to an old menu, it used to only be RM23.90. I'm speechless.

I know it wouldn't be fair to compare prices now to how it was before GST and all the mess which we call the Malaysian economy but damn.

If you're used to paying RM35 for one dish then this might be just another night out for you. But it's really heart and wallet wrenching for me. Even if the 3 meatballs were crazy good.

• Overall Dining Experience •

🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑

I took away a star for the price and the bland carbonara. However, the service was good and we had a friendly waitress who was also patient. Also my meatballs were superb. Can you tell I'm in love with the meatballs? I might not go back to Ben's on my own accord but I wouldn't mind having a meetup with friends at any of their outlets.
